F3 – Functional Prototypes

I took this week as an opportunity to redefine my concept for this this project; this included changing my choice in materially, which in turn changed the production process I was going to pursue. After brainstorming how I could improve the form and functionality, in terms of relating it to a personal narrative, I decided to draw inspiration from the frequent power outages I experienced throughout my childhood. However, I didn’t feel like the narrative was fully resolved and came back to the idea of using Arabic designs and imagery  I explored in F1 as a decorative feature.

Product Statement (In Progress): ________ is a set of 2 tea light candle holders that drew its form and functionality from the frequent power outages experienced throughout my childhood whilst living in Bahrain.  The products use their light source to cast decorative shadows around its surrounding environment.

F3 Presentation

I am a Bahraini product designer based in New York City. I am currently pursuing a degree in product design at Parsons the New School of Design. With a focus on furniture and housewares, I am very hands on in my design process; often designing through the manufacturing process. I continue to challenge myself by taking on projects as an opportunity to explore materiality and processes. Rather than hiding imperfections in a piece, I bring them to the forefront of the concept to highlight the manufacturing process.
