Space/Materiality: Body – Foam core models, mood-board and grid drawings

Design Concept:

I wanted my creation to show the beauty of nature in a perfect geometric form. My ideas browsed mostly through animals and natural elements, such as deer, bears, horses, fish etc. I later came across bees in a honeycomb, and was instantly attracted to the visual image of the shapes I saw. Perfectly aligned and connected, it was a never ending pattern that captivated my whole idea about the organic form.

I thought about how I could connect this to the human body, and realized that it could connect perfectly as the cells of a lung, as they were symmetrical and geometrically equal, and would show the importance of something we usually don’t think about.

Artist Statement:

I have always been fascinated by nature. It is such a wonder to see how our environment and the animals that prosper within it live around us. The world itself is our home, and nowadays, with signs of global warming and the destroying of habitats, I wanted to use this opportunity to express the feelings I connect nature with, such as tranquility and harmony.

My initial mood board contained many pictures and ideas through nature and animals, such as geometric forms of bears and deer to mountains and the sun . Through careful consideration and planning, I came upon the honeycomb form and I instantly decided to incorporate them into my design concept. To me it signifies unity and harmony because I’ve learned about bees and their hives in the past, and also how they have to work together to build and create this geometric masterpiece. The form was so organic and organized, with perfect connections to each other, all made by such simple animals; bees. It instantly captivated me and I immediately wanted these shapes to be infused in my final piece. Finally, I wanted to use that whole visual concept to create of a pair of lungs, to portray a connection the the human body and show the beauty of such geometric yet natural shapes put together.

The process was a time consuming process. I went through many difficulties trying to get each shape the exact same size, length and have the perfect fit for each to connect together. But through persistence and motivation, I managed to complete both the lungs symmetrically and secured.
