Bridge 2: Investigating Authentic Materials from Film

The Museum of Moving Image is a museum dedicated to theĀ appreciation of art, history, technique and technology of film, television, and digital media. Because of my interest in Fashion Design, I was drawn towards the costume aspect of films. I was inspired by a particular costume, a fully black gown.

I decided to create the dress on a miniature dress form. However, the dress form had no arms, and I followed my instincts to recreate the dress without its sleeves.

I couldn’t use fabric for this project. I think this criteria led me to experiment with the idea of using a trash bag as a core material.

The idea was to recreate the dress as similarly as I could see it. I used beige scrap fabric to create a ruffle effect on her neckline and manipulated the trash bag to create similar pleats. I also used non conventional materials like push pins to act as buttons on her back.

Experimenting with a non conventional material like a trash bag pushed my boundaries. I struggled with the execution because of its flimsy texture and its tendency to tear but creating a dress from waste was an exciting experience.
