For the final project for Digital Tools: Layout and Design, I was supposed to select an object that came as a whole and in parts. When I first heard about this project, I was slightly confused. But, after looking at examples I realised what I wanted to do. I wanted to integrate the culture of my home, India, with this final project. I decided to create postage stamps based on the most important festival of India, Diwali. It has always been one of my favourite festivals.
Step 1: First, I started to create a mind map and small sketches of what I was planning. But, I had to check the sticker maker guidelines and accordingly move forward.
Step 2: Once I finished building my concept, I began working on creating the stamps on Illustrator.
Step 3: I submitted several drafts of stamp sheets for printing on the sticker maker, and selected the best one. I also attempted to make a yellow color stamp sheet, but the guidelines of sticker maker wouldn’t let me.
Step 4: For the presentation, I wanted to use an envelope and a handwritten letter to act as the informational element.
“Diwali, or Deepawali, is the most significant festival in Indian culture. The ‘Festival of Lights’ marks the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. This postage stamp sheet serves as a tribute to the joyous celebrations of our culture. Each stamp depicts a distinct aspect of t his five day festival- lit diyas (clay lamps), fireworks, jewelry, flowers, and rangoli. These limited edition holiday stamps are a wonderful addition to anyone’s Diwali celebration. Come rejoice with us!”
With this project, I was able to capture the essence of my culture, and its traditions. It was a really personal and inspiring project for me as I used my very own memories and photos for the stamps. I am eagerly looking forward to using these stamps.
Tarana, I am glad this project was inspiring for you. Nice upload.
