Bridge 4: Activation

Expanding on the Bridge 3 of Integrative Studio 2, my first idea was to create a mini collection of four looks inspired by the lead characters of Gossip Girl. But as I started working on it, I realised that I wanted to do something more creative. Throughout this first year, I have created almost 10 books and I thought, why not add one more to the collection. Thus, I decided to present the illustrations of my mini collection in a zine.

My final project is called ‘Detachable Labels’, as each look offers an individual the opportunity to wear a label they want, with pride, or not at all. For this collection and zine, I was essentially inspired by the idea of identity and ‘labels’ that society forms. I wanted it to address our society and inspire change within our mindsets. This collection revolves around the relationship between fashion and identity, and uses bold text to reflect this relationship.

I wanted to create a diverse range of looks, and so I created day and night looks inspired by the style of Blair Waldorf and Serena Van Der Woodsen. This collection is illustrated with a combination of Copic brush markers and digital softwares as I wanted this zine to be polished and modern. This is how I progressed with my illustrations.

The idea of the looks is that an individual can wear the ‘Manipulative’ skirt or the ‘Free Spirit’ top with confidence and pride, but can detach it from herself if needed. She does not need to wear the same label forever or let it define her. I believe this concept can be inspiring and empowering.

I also added a QR Code in the zine which allows an individual to scan it and obtain a PDF of it directly on their phones. This was a last minute addition that I believe was a success.

My final zine is attached in a PDF below. I simply loved working on this collection. I would love to expand on this project by developing the idea of ‘Detachable Labels’ further and actually creating a clothing collection based on it.
