WEEK 9

When it comes to light and architectural design, Louis Kahn has to be mentioned, and the Kimbell Art Museum is an excellent example of light in Kahn’s architectural works. When the structure is in relation to the light, the light appears to be powerful. In the design of museums, the exhibition hall is controlled by natural light as the main idea of this design. At the Kimbell Art Museum, Kahn designed a sort of tubular vaulted roof and let in light through a skylight. In fact, this arched structure is actually more inclined to curved beams, the longitudinal span between the columns. The curve determined by structure is a rotation curve. Light through a vault in the middle of the slit into the rotation curve, lit up the silver concrete roof, most of the light through the reflex of the baffle plate to vault side, at the same time there is a small part of the light through the reflection board, not make the reflection plate on the back of the dark, so the whole vault into one smooth light source, also brings to the interior space is suitable for natural light. The silver texture of the interior light in the concrete arch under the action of natural light. This sense of light will be spread evenly throughout the room rather than directly onto the exhibits while allowing people to comfortably experience natural light changes over time. So, the structure, the materials, the light, the design, all fit together in this museum. It feels this series of designs is how natural lighting related to architecture.
