Orange Sailors Exhibition, Athens, Greece.
All pieces sold, all money donated to United Nations Refugee Agency in Greece.
Syrian Refugees in focus. “Orange Sailors” was the title of the exhibition, as Syrian refugees travel by sea, and can be distinguished by the fluorescent orange life-vests they wear whilst travelling. Most pieces centred around this theme.
The piece I created for Orange Sailors was painted using orange acrylic on a paper map, representing the seemingly endless distance the refugees had to travel to reach safe land due to the war in their country. I called the painting ‘Panic Alarm’ to represent the terror and fear from the war, experienced by the Syrians when they had to escape their country. The use of fluorescent orange fits into the theme but also is associated with a bleeping siren or panic alarm, giving me the idea for the title.
