Draw String Bag

In Space/ Materiality, we created a drawstring bag. Our materials were: Muslin fabric, a 76” Nylon cord, a cord lock and a sewing machine.

The first step was to iron our fabric and cut it down to a 54” by 28” rectangle.

The second step was to pin the fabric at 3/8” on the long side and machine stitch 1/4” from the fold. Although I have experience sewing by hand, I have never used a sewing machine before and was immediately overwhelmed by the many moving parts of the machine. However, with some trial and error, I eventually made some clean stitches.

After this stitch, we folded and pinned the fabric again at 3/4”. We then made our last top stitch 1/8” from the first fold to create the cavity for the string.

The next step was the last stitch, closing the bag. We folded the bag in half and stitched 1/4” from the edge and made sure not to stitch over the draw string compartment.

Once the final stitch was done, we could turn our bag inside out and run the string through the bag. First we put wire in the string cavity to help thread the string through the whole bag.

When the string was threaded, we could cut the string to size and put the cord stop through the bag. However, once I took my string home, it frayed in my pocket. It became very difficult to thread the string through the bag so instead, I used a shoelace.

I’m glad that I now have working knowledge on how to use a sewing machine and I have a halfway decent bag that I actually use for class now.
