Video Lino
Brainstorming:
My first idea was to film a video regarding racism during coronavirus pandemic. To adjust to the quarantine situation, I changed my idea. I want to do something relates to overcoming fear. I believe, at this point of time, it is important to make a positive impact among people. FEAR NOT is my message.
Concept
The concept is to manipulate time and movements to create a sense of encouragement and hope for people. Personality, I think it’s quite normal for humans to have fears. However, it starts to have a negative impact on people when we are too bound to take actions. The essential philosophy of Chinese Martial art is not the simple act of fighting but the peaceful hybridization with the sky and the earth. Same with overcoming fear. Violence is not the way to make anyone stronger. Only calmness and assurance in mind and soul can make a fearless warrior at any time.
Process
I started the project with writing a poem about my fear. Then I drew down some scenes I want to capture. The filming was separated to two days. The first time I went to the forest alone early morning and I found it was very difficult to capture everything alone. There was no one in the forest and I was actually a bit scared. I passed some swamps, uprooted trees, woods and probably some wild animals. Fortunately, the sun was guiding me and letting my fear slowly go away. I went home and thought about the fear I experienced that day. Several days later, I went to the forest with my mum and asked her to my actor. We crossed small stream, swamps and ran the hills. It rained the day before so it was a bit difficult to film but we still managed to get some good footages. The beauty of the nature stunned us and it gave us the peace in mind. The editing process took the longest time. I recorded several versions of the underlying narrative and combined them together. The music credit is from the sound track of Avatar.
Reflection:
1). The topic of FEAR NOT is very true to myself. During the quarantine time, I have time to deeply reflect my fear. The making process of the filming is a healing process for myself and hopefully many others.
2) Even I was staying home, I tried to make this video innovative or at least challenging for myself. I have never filmed a movie with so much action involved. During the filming process, I was trying to capture a scene from several angles just like what was done in action movies. Since I am the only person filming, a better solution is to film a same scene several times with different techniques and angles. There is a lot of room for improvement.
3). The editing skills can be improved too. Especially working with the paste of the sound and the climax of the video is very important. I want to make the emotions the film synchronize with the sound better in future projects.
