Bridge 2 Photo Essay

Our photo essay compares the quiet comfort of a coffee shop to the bustling chaos of Times Square which can be tied to the familiarity of home versus the terrifying nature of being in a new city.  In The Devil Wears Prada, The Coffee Shop is a place where the protagonist can take a break from her hectic work schedule and be with her friends. The photos of the coffee shop are arranged with a certain amount of space between each other, allowing the viewer to concentrate on each image individually. Similar to what can be experienced in a coffee shop, the viewer is able to give themselves time to take in their surroundings. In contrast, the photos of Times Square are arranged in a jumbled fashion, with images popping out at different heights and sizes in order to mimic, not only the towering billboards but also the unpredictable nature of New York City. Times Square, like many other locations in The Devil Wears Prada, is shown as a chaotic yet glamorous hub full of promise and excitement. The images chosen are compressed and layered in order to exaggerate the crowding of people and flashes of colorful lights. This can translate into either glamour or chaos. We chose to utilize a larger amount of photos from Times Square compared to the coffee shop to show a contrast between the population of the two places. The content of the images represents the contrast as well. The imagery of the coffee shop is simple and straightforward while the photos of Times Square are general views of the location with everything happening at once. The viewer is forced to experience the drastic difference between the two locations in one frame. Images of the coffee shop evoke comfort and familiarity of home, then quickly shifts to the chaos and newness of Times Square.
