Circle Line Field Trip Reflection

The circle line field trip was a really fun way to learn about the water systems in New York while getting to enjoy the weather and sightsee. I had never seen the statue of liberty so that was a really cool experience, but I also got to see things I have already seen like Brooklyn bridge park. When the speaker who was speaking about water collection was explaining why we could collect water, I was excited because it connects back to our water PH lab and why we collected water to map pollution. I thought the second speaker who talked about the effects of hurricanes was really interesting because I’m from Florida and I’m so used to them and we have proper measures in place to protect from them. I thought it was good to learn about how it affects New York in a different way and how action needs to be taken seriously to avoid issues with the next hurricane. The quote about how we need to “let the water in” and start living with the water rather than trying to block it out really spoke to me. Water is a natural part of this earth and doing things to keep it from areas where it is meant to be isn’t doing anyone any favors so it’s better to just make proper accommodations to live in peace with the water. The last speaker was interesting but made me a bit disgusted to learn about how much human waste ends up in the water, especially after it rains. This made me open my eyes and know that we need a better way to manage waste so that all of this backup isn’t ending up in the water. In the future, this water pollution can get worse and worse and wastewater needs a better way to be managed.
