Effective Date: April 27, 2019

POLICY TITLE: Supply Swap: Addressing Material Waste

Purpose:

Art Students across the globe are struggling with the constant money spending required in order to complete coursework. The items they are asked to purchase do not get used fully and end up being thrown out or put in storage. Students are drowning in debt, contributing to capitalism by wasting money frequently on supplies that other students may have and are not making use of. This policy will implement a system called Supply Swap in which students have a place to donate excess supplies, and also collect the donated materials at no cost in an effort to save money and sustainably provide materials to this community. Supply Swap is a functioning organization founded by The New School in New York City. This motion is meant to bring the Supply Swap method to all universities in the United States that have art programs in an effort to reduce waste, spending, and help students in need.

Scope:

This policy is meant to apply to all art students currently attending colleges in the United States. This policy will greatly affect this specific community as it is one of a very unique nature. Compared to students in more traditional areas of study, art students require a very large amount of materials and resources in order to complete their coursework. The supplies they need to purchase in every class can be very expensive, and they are generally not one time purchases. New materials need to be bought on a per project, per class basis. This can add up very quickly and aside from the high cost, this produces a large amount of waste, as not all the purchased materials go to use.
