Studio – Visualize Your Senses

For this project I chose to illicit the memory of my mother and I in the garden. When I was six years old, on one specific day, I remember enjoying the beautiful flowers and smells of the lavender engulfing me as I watched my mother sprinkle seeds in the soil. Only minutes later, dark thunder clouds started rolling over us, quickly covering the sun and a fear in me began to surface. As a little girl, I was always terrified of storms, and being outside on this particular day made it seem even scarier. I remember my mom reaching down, and as she handled me a lavender flower she said, “April showers bring May flowers”. I have such a vivid memory of this moment because I can always apply it to any difficult situation I’m going through. When bad day happen, often times they lead to good ones.

With this memory in mind, I chose to gather fresh lavender flowers and visually create the saying my mother said to me that day. The sense I chose to utilize was a visual concept. I intended for the use of the flowers in the piece to give the viewer an image of being in a garden or field of flowers in nature. I chose to use a white, clean background to further emphasize the message.
