Studio – Times Square Essay

Max Neuhaus’s Sound Installation

Deniz and I stepped out into Times Square. We were immediately overwhelmed with the people, cars horns, music, yelling, billboards, and more. We spent minutes on minutes walking around searching for the installation, not exactly sure what we were looking for. Finally, after looking around for about thirty minutes we looked down below our feet and saw the simple teal lines traced out on the grates in the street. Deniz and I stood there in awe, listening to the bustling sounds of the city. At first we didn’t understand what we were supposed to be hearing exactly. Then after a few minutes we heard it: the distant, soft hum of the city. Not the people, not the cars, not the music. It was almost an unrecognizable buzz that one could easily miss. It was only there for a few seconds, and then suddenly the noises of the city all came rushing back. Just as quickly as it came, it was gone. We found ourselves back in reality, back to the hustle and bustle of New York City. This specific installation was intriguing to me. If we hadn’t have searched for it, I’m sure we would have never noticed it. The way that the artist created it to be so discreet and hidden was what interested me. It was unique, in its’ own simple way.
