Jeff Wall: Response Writing

Jeff Wall is a Canadian artist, known for his pioneering photography and writing on art history. In this photography, We can see a middle aged African-American man living secretly in his messy room, looks like a basement. Because it didn’t see any windows around it. The first point draw my attention is that the ceiling. The low ceiling looks like it will falling down, but it has thousand more light bulbs hanging there.  The space fill up with different objects as clothing, dishes, garbage, kitchen kits, and furnitures. This is a very personal space. It’s a open space that is unique that belongs to that person. Clothes that hung up, dishes places on the left side corner, sofa and chair placed in the middle of the room. Colorful rag hung all around the place. It’s messy but it wouldn’t make viewer to feel uncomfortable. Instead makes me feel like comfortable. It’s like a comfortable zoom to stay in.  The man is sitting there completely still and little bit alone but peaceful. The lighting in this room is low and soft.
