Sustainable Systems @ The UN

Last Thursday our sustainable systems class got to visit the UN to hear from multiple influential speakers in the Trustee Council Chamber. Parsons dean Joel Towers introduced our first speaker, Christine Antoine, who discussed how Denmark puts sustainability into their cities and civil spaces. She said that in order to make a city more livable, the city has to have more open/green spaces and room to breathe. In Copenhagen, there are countless green spaces and bike paths. Biking is a huge part of the Danish community, and because of this people are outside more and the community is actually being brought together and in a more sustainable way because they aren’t driving as many cars. Denmark and other countries in northern/western Europe are putting sustainability into their designs for the greater good of their nation and the future of their people. Leaving the UN, I imagined a New York City that was more sustainable than it is. I think that future designers/engineers/makers need to take into consideration the affect of future generations their creations will hold. Making a cleaner, more environmentally friendly, and livable New York City could change the way lives are lived here for the better and the way the environment around us grows
