Meringue Dress (Final)

Meringue Dress (Final)

Reflection on my final dress

My final dress came out quite different to what I imagine in my mind (as it always happens), however, this time I am satisfied with the result – yes, there are still few little things I would work on to make it more comfortable to wear, but this time I really paid my attention to lining and the inside construction. Now I am admiring of conceptual artists even more than before – they can make it crazy-bizarre-looking on the outside, but still need to keep an eye on the inside of their garments, which is twice as much work to do. My inspiration became designers Victor&Rolf. Right after we were assigned to look for conceptual designers I knew right away that I would choose them, and, to be specific, their summer 2015 collection that included pieces made of literal framed canvas. This collection inspired me regardless the idea of vanished boundary between fashion and art – anything could be fashion as anything could be an art piece, it all depends on how you look at it. So while brainstorming with designs for my dress I included multiple edges and twists into my drawings. I honestly did not know what exactly I was going for, while at the same time keeping in my mind the intentions to make something oversized, with straight lines. And my final garment includes both elements – the torso part is very oversized, and very straight. I know that my dress looks completely different from my inspiration pictures, and the style seems different, though I found it really amazing how from one thing your inspiration may lead you to creating absolutely different thing, something brand new and unique. Few alterations were made to my design; I simplified it a little just to be sure that I will finish it on time. On the back I added my favorite element – pearls, along with the spinal cord line. Hardest part to sew was shiffon, I never had a chance to work with it before, so I have to say that was a struggle. Another struggling (and entertaining at the same time) thing were the ruffles, just to keep them all in precise order and now to sew the wrong parts to each other while using the sewing machine.
