Intro to fashion studies response
- “Fashion is gossip. Never underestimate the power of gossip. Semiologists are driven into ecstasies of supposition by its whispers.”
Fashion indeed can represent a gossip, since it is majorly related to a certain person’s look and style. We can say a lot about the person by simply glancing at what he is wearing and how he is wearing it. We can also make quick assumptions based on that concrete look. However, our conclusion can end up being absolutely wrong, since the perception of who that person is based on the clothes he is wearing could turn out to be completely different from how his personality/character is really like. Same scheme applies to the gossip – we hear a lot of different things randomly brought to our ears and have a choice to believe it or not.
2. ” Fashion is intensely personal, in the same way that poetry is intensely personal. It is a medium through which personal stories can be told, memories re-lived and futures foretold.
Designers show their history appreciation through making collections based on a very deep research. This way, besides appreciation, they communicate with the audience, telling their own story by putting their research outcome into designs. If it is about memories, fashion can bring a specific range of emotions and feelings, it can bring an inspiration or simply a visual kind of joy. Intimate and private things are being kept in concepts that turn clothes into something more, something that carries a meaning in it. People seeing the story ongoing through the collection can be participants of the story being told by the designer, if he manages to find a way to communicate to the people with his creations.
