There was an assignment that asked me to research an indigenous people and made designs that were modern, wearable, creative and on trend with current style, I did research on the Mongols.
The Mongols is a nomadic ethnic group on grassland. They are called people on
the horseback, so they wear riding boots all the time.
The colors create a kind of unexpected harmony. With the splendid patterns, the mongols is a optimistic group.
Horses are so important to them, so they make this element into their musical instrument Morin khuur.

Their traditional costumes use stings of beads as
decorations that are mostly made of red coral and turquoise.
They live on vast grassland. To be recognized easily even from a long distance away, they like to use bright colors on their daily wearing.
Tengri (sky) is their god. They believe in Tengri’s vast and inclusiveness.

In my design, the riding
boots have beads as decorations. For the first outfit, strings of beads are hanged on the
sleeveless satin top. The same cloth is used on the pants to demonstrate Mongols’
untrammeled nature. The swinging beads represent their easy-going characteristic. The
string weaving on the top edge and the pants are in their favorite bright colors. This
design will be worn in summer.
I added a horse on the side to help understanding the relationship between my design and the mongols.
In the second outfit, the ripped jeans skirt represents
blue sky and white clouds. The heart shaped pattern is commonly used. On inspiration
page, the blue and white ger, the sleeves and front of top right two women all have the
same design. My second top uses this pattern. It also has an attached collar. I use the
same knots shown on costumes on inspiration page to connect collar with main body. The
white scarf in the woman’s hand is hadag, a greeting gift. The white edge of the leather
jacket I design is a transformation of hadag. And the red weaving part is a red lucky
cloud. This design will be worn in late summer and early fall.
