Integrative Seminar 2: Research

Theme: Voice for the voiceless

Working Thesis:

Disney classic and renaissance era princess stories are potential causes of social phobia in children in US. Children may misunderstand friendship after seeing that all of princess’s friends are nonhuman. (claim, specific)

Revised Thesis:

Cinderella and The Little Mermaid are popular princess stories of Disney that company a lot of American children’s childhood. However, the story setting that the princess’s closest friends are all nonhuman may affects children’s social value and causes SADC.

Storyboard:

More Familiar to Least Familiar

Although it is logic to explain something to the readers from the topics they are more familiar with, it doesn’t fit my thesis. The thesis is about Disney princess’s influence on children, so I have to point to Disney princess as early as I can. Otherwise, after I finish introducing everything, it’s hard to pull readers’ attention to Disney princesses.

Simple to Complex:

As I explained above, my research paper have to tie social phobia closely to Disney princess. Therefore, I have to introduce Disney princess to the readers as soon as possible. After they have an understanding of the stories and the characters, I can pull the relation to social phobia. From simple to complex is more logic for my thesis.

Potential Topic: Social Phobia in Children

Why do some children have difficulties express themselves and communicate with others?

What do I already know?

Most of the education starts from teaching children to become good people. Children are taught the right social value, but when they grow up, the value is not applicable.

What do I believe?

I believe the education system has certain flaw that it doesn’t reach the designed effect. The environment makes those people who believes in those values silent. They struggle because they think they are doing what was taught, but public’s reaction shows that they were stupid.

What emotions do I feel about this question?

I feel mad, depressed and pitiful for them at the same time.

What am I unsure about?

I’m not sure if it’s those people should be enlarged to lead other people go back to their value, or should the public find more gentle ways to let those people give up their values.

This story is a tale for both children and adults. It contains a lot of social values the ceramic rabbit believed and later it changed. This is a typical tale with direct education about social values. The change happen on the ceramic rabbit makes me think about the conflicts between different values.
