We were thinking about two locations at first
- The girl wanders and stops in front of the Metropolitan Museum at dawn. The lighting is ambiguous: Half of the building is in the dark; the other half shines in the sunshine. She doesn’t know which half she belongs to.
- The girl is in a vintage shop. The historic interior decoration is too heavy that darkens the whole atmosphere. There is a huge mirror in front of her. Even the mirror can’t reflect who she is. She leans on it and shows her back to the camera but turns her head to another direction.
The girl looks dull because of her blank eyes, but her makeup matches with her inner world. She has big eyes with exaggerated eyelashes. She has pink blush with fake freckles. Her hair is tied up to two buns. Her makeup is so lively that contrasts with her expression. She is at the age of transition, stuck between girl’s sweetness and adolescence’s expressive. (Makeup inspirations are showed below)
Process:
(Thanks to our model)
Later when we reconsidered about our piece, it is freestyle with a little bit girly sweetness. During the shooting, we accidentally found this staircase and thought it really fits this concept of our piece.
Final Photos:
The dark environment and uneven lighting imprisoned the girl’s unruly soul. The sign on the door indicated that it was not an exit, but she tried to break it to escape from this space, like how anxious she wanted to escape from her struggle. She was rebellious on one side, but on the other side her makeup and hairstyle implied that she was still immature.
