Long Life Design Final Project :50 Year Pocket Hoodie

 50 Year Pocket Hoodie

What did you make and why?

I chose to make a lounge wear hoodie that can be wore backwards. It functions as a pocket that I can store handy objects that I may need at home over the next 50 years.

In what ways will this object/design be useful to you over 50 years of change? How will it be resilient (used in more than one way etc. and/or encourage social resiliency through its usage)?

At the first part of the 50 years, it mainly stores snacks and hold the crumbs when my hands are busing doing other works. At the later years, considering about my aging, I will start forgetting things. Therefore, those small objects that sometimes could be lost can be stored in the hoodie. In addition, this hoodie can help me controlling my body temperature in an air-conditioned environment. Dressing-up to go out is very tiring for me. If I have to go to nearby shops or do something quickly and come back, I can use the big hoodie to cover myself, especially my face.

What specific event(s) of environmental change will it help you adapt to or address?

Nowadays, almost all buildings have air-conditioner on everyday through a year. As a out layer, this hoodie will keep me warm during summer when the ac is too strong. During the winter, the temperature will be too high and not environmentally friendly if I set it as a temperature I can wear short sleeves. Therefore, I can lower the temperature and wear this hoodie.

What materials did you use, given what you have learned this semester about changing resources and material availability?

I use cotton jersey for this hoodieAnd I attached a lining in the hoodie, so that it can be washed and replaced easily. The zipper is metal for it to hopefully last 50 years. The materials are common fabrics used for garment. If I have to repair it in the future, any of the garment can be replaced with the coexistent materials people wear.

How does your object offer function and aesthetics over time? How does it fulfill the Long-Life Design criteria to the best of your ability?

My hoodie fulfills Long-Life Design criteria 1, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10.

Function;

This garment is a lounge wear. It is usually worn backwards,  so the hoodie is at the front and is larger than a usual hoodie. It reminds me to sit straight and don’t curl my spine all the time. It’s an out layer pajama that I can wear it outside of all shape of clothes. No matter I wear a sleeping pajama or clothes I plan to wear it outside, I can put on this hoodie as a protector.

20s-30s I use it as a snack holder. It allows me to set my snacks closer to my mouth, so I don’t drop the crumbs on the table while I have another hand working on the laptop or something else.

40s-50s I start to be less aware of my daily life. This is one thing I notice from my parents. In their ages, their life has already been pretty stable. There is less challenge in their daily life, so they are very familiar with everything around them. Then they start to have those mistakes (They even can’t be called as mistakes, but) they never had before. Also, I’m a very unorganized person. Therefore, I can put a note pad (or any kind of memo we will use in the future) in the hoodie and note down my life. I am probably busy at work all the time, so I can put the tools I may need in my work in the hoodie. I’m too busy taking care of my health, so I put supplements in it.

60s-70s I keep being more forgetful, so I put in tv remote, emergency medicine and phone (or the kind of communication equipment we use in the future)in it. It will be too much work to dress up and go out if I just want to go out for a short time, for example, grocery shopping or pick up my package at the concierge. I can wear this big hoodie that covers my face and go out comfortably.

Repair:

In order for it to be easily cleaned, The lining of the hoodie will be attached with a line of buttons underneath the hem. There is also lining for the cuff that can be pull out and wear it over the edge of the sleeves to protect it from getting dirty.

Repair Story

The lining for hoodie and the cuffs can be replaced over the 50 years if it break.

Use the same pattern for hoodie

Cut two pieces on lining fabric

Serge or overlock the edges

Mark the measurement according to the actual hoodie. Fold and press the hem.

Pin the lining into the hoodie. The edge of the lining goes under the hem of the hoodie.

Notch where the buttons are.

Attach the string and hang them over the buttons.

Cut two pieces for cuffs.

Insert in elastic band. The band should be shorter than the width of the cuff.

Sew the side seam. Then, sew the cuff into the hem of the sleeves.
