Materiality & Assembly

Ashlie_Baptiste Field Trip 2

On February 4th our Materiality and Assembly class took a trip trough the chelsea area . Our first visit was to the IAC building designed by Frank Gehry. The exterior of the building was a work of art all on its own. The entirety of the exterior was made of a frosted glass material. Two interesting details inside where the floors and the seating area. The floors were concrete that resembled stone, which was actually terrazzo. The seating area was beautiful. It was wood that was set in an organic shape that was curved and well crafted.

The walk through the chelsea market was very interesting. I have been through  there multiple times but never had the opportunity to stop and take in the different surfaces. My favorite material was the brick wall. I kine the fact that it was not new and perfect, it had character. You can see where the cement was poured over the wall to cover it up and the chipped away to make its beauty visible again. The walk through of the chelsea market by itself was rustic, classic yet modern.Brick wall

The last place that we visited was the standard. Ik don’t think I have been to a restaurant that had such a variety of materials and surface areas. The things that stood out the most to me was the ceramic covered molded white wall and the ceiling lights that were in cylinder form. It was such a beautifully well crafted space with various materials from stone to reflective surfaces that were harmoniously grouped together.IMG_7466IMG_7467
