Materiality & Assembly

Ashlie_Baptiste Field Trip 3

This field trip has been my favorite thus far. I feel like I’ve got an opportunity to get a true sense of a variety of materials.

Our first stop on the trip was the Aesop store. Though I have past by these stores a few times I had never gone in. When I first entered the store I immediately notice the drastic sound difference. It was significantly quite inside the store than outside. I later found out this was because of the felt that was layered on the walls. The felt also aided to the warm temperature in the store. The plywood with the white oak vinear was a great accent to the charcoal grey felt.

The rustic and salvaged look really spoke to the essence of the store, along with the conventional terrazzo.

IMG_7506 NYU was the next stop on our adventure. The highlight of this location was the stairway, that was made out of sheet metal panels ( most likely steel) with shapes cut out, that appeared to be laser cut or water jet cut.IMG_7512IMG_7514There were also rectangular panels on the windows. When the light hit those panels it created a rainbow color effect.

The Bobst Library was up next. . .

upon arrival to the Library, the very first accent that I noticed were the bronze patterned sheet metal lining the atrium.IMG_7517 IMG_7516One of the most fascinating things was the variety in marble used on the floors and walls of the spaceIMG_7518

Owen: Though this stop was brief it was memorable, One of my teachers from first year actually spoke about this store being designed by one of his friends. I can describe this store as simple and clever. who would have though regular brown paper bags could make a space so beautiful ?IMG_7521

IMG_7522IMG_7523The last stop was  a second Aesop store : capturing the same theme of salvaged and rustic, it was completely different from the the first store.IMG_7535IMG_7534IMG_7531 IMG_7527 IMG_7529There was also a sound control effect because of the alignment of the wood along the ceilings and the walls. One of the most interesting features of the store were the Elk leather flooring. some interesting facts about the store. . .IMG_7536 each store is complete with aroma stones that are hidden in these boxes to give a calming effect along with signature smell of the store.IMG_7526Birtch wood finish on the shelves.
