Installation artist statement

With my installation I am trying to commentated on something that is very important to me, and that is how we as humans communicate with one another. Specifically, with our cell phones. Many people have the outlook that they are nothing but a nuisance, and the example of people being on their phones at the dinner table is one that comes up most frequently. To an extent, I agree with this. It is a bit annoying when you are trying to have dinner with a group or if you are out to dinner with someone and they are distracted by their phone. I wanted to a dress this in some way, so what I thought would be best with this project would be to create a dinner set for two that was set up like it would be a t a nice restaurant. The set ups are next to each and the phones that are across from each are video calling the person next to them, showing that the only way you could be fully engaged with the person you’re sitting with is to be on your phone talking to them, despite them being right next to you. I did not want to end the topic there however. I feel that people can so often forget the positive things that technology can do for us. As someone who is in a long-distance relationship, I wanted to highlight the benefit of technology for communication by mimicking the first set up in a different way. Instead of being next to each other, these two set ups would be in separate rooms with very basic cutlery, emulating the feeling of being able to video call someone far away and “have dinner with them.” With both these set ups starting in the same room, I would want people to interact with and try to see what if they can figure out for themselves what the meaning is and see if it resonates with them and how they conduct themselves in this regard in their own lives. Overall, I wanted this project to show a different, more positive side to what has become a tired argument.
