Final Project Work/Documentation

Artist Statement:

With my final project, I wanted to portray my conclusion that I came to in seminar with my analysis on the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. By the end of my work in seminar, I came to the conclusion that Marvel’s superheroes are popular due to their humanity and relatable problems. With this in mind, I decided that I would focus on Marvel Studios’ first and most popular character, Iron Man, and create a piece that was symbolic for his humanity.

With this piece in particular, I decided that I would combine two props from the films Iron Man and The Avengers that summarize Tony Stark’s (aka Iron Man) humanity. The first item that I chose to represent this was  the very first Arc Reactor encased in a glass box with the phrase “Proof that Tony Stark has a heart” engraved around the reactor itself. Second, I chose to incorporate this prop into the Mark VII Iron Man suit which was worn by Stark during the battle for New York, which would became the root of Tony Stark’s anxiety and made him more relatable as a person.

When creating this piece, I wanted the subject to look as un-human as possible as to portray the average person’s view on Marvel’s superheroes (or, in this case, Iron Man). Also, I wanted to ensure the Arc Reactor stood out from the rest of the piece because it is supposed to represent the “heart” (or humanity) of Iron Man himself. Also, this choice was made so the words around the reactor could be easily seen in darker lit areas.

Prototype/Work Progress:

When I first began creating this piece, I had the objective of recreating the Arc Reactor prop from Iron Man (pictured above). But when I presented my idea to my classmates, they suggested to create something that wasn’t a recreation of something from the film. With this in mind, I decided that I wouldn’t create my own Arc Reactor and would, instead, create a portrait of Iron Man that was symbolic for his humanity. Also, when I began to create the Arc Reactor, I ran into trouble trying to incorporate the LED lights into the piece (and did not have authorization to use the metal/laser shop) so I decided to use a pre-made Arc Reactor. This way, I could focus on the portrait itself.
