Responce to TEDC

I went to the TEDC conference in the earth day. I was really drawn by DJ spooky’s presentation. His pursuit for bridging climate change into graphic design and music is, I am convinced, very relevant for our civilization in the present. This is because his work invents or redefines the way in which the message of sustainability is transmitted. DJ spooky makes sustainability a cool thing.

DJ spooky is an electronic and experimental hip-hop artist. He is convinced that “the cultural capital of the arts now is more powerful than ever” and acts according to this responsibility that this entails. I consider his career valuable in that it uses a non-ordinary medium, music, to talk about sustainability. In this way he is able to tackle a whole new audience that conventional mediums fail to reach.

In his presentation, DJ Spooky talked about how he travelled to Antarctica in the search of new ways to produce music. Seeing those huge glaciers, he asked himself: “what are the mathematics of ice?” This question evolved into a whole new take on music.
