Stools / Figure Landscape

First, we drew a still life of several stools on our drawing pad. I started out with a little draft on the paper and then transferred it to a bigger drawing.
We also drew several models, focusing on the basic structure of the human body without shading. We then chose one drawing to continue with that included gestures with angles.

Then, we scanned the stools and figure drawings and worked digitally. We put them into Illustrator and arranged them in order to create many clear negative shapes. We then printed the images and cut out the white shapes to create two collages, one with a white figure on a black background, and one in which the figure and ground were ambiguous. The two pieces had to use exactly the same shapes.
At last, we had to re-create our collages digitally. One composition shows a white “figure” on a black background, and one shows an ambiguous relationship between “figure” and “ground,” with both the black and white shapes playing important roles.
