Bridge 4 Short Doc

The focus of my piece is my process of learning about and integrating my Malaysian culture. For the historical context, I’m using the Communist Party rising to power in China because this is what caused my grandfather to move to Malaysia from China. The objective of my piece is to share my journey of going through this process in hopes of encouraging others to do the same. My intended others are those who feel like they’re also missing part of their cultural identity which is why the purpose of this documentary is to show this audience that it’s possible to fill in that missing culture.

The research that I found talked about the process that allowed the Communist Party in China to take over. The main leader of the movement was Mao Zedong and he lead the Communist Revolution of 1949. The success of his revolution can mostly be contributed to the fact that Chinese citizens were looking for a different government, one that would help the country move forward from the devastation caused by world wars. However, some citizens didn’t want the Communist party in charge so large groups of Chinese would emigrate out of the country with a majority going to Hong Kong and Southeast Asian countries.

As for my production plan, I want to go to the different restaurants I found in New York City that serve Malaysian cuisine and document myself trying it. Then I want to interview my dad as well as friends to learn more information about Malaysia and what it feels like to be missing their cultural identity. Then I want to draw my grandfather over pictures that I have of Malaysia because I don’t have any photographs of him.

Here are the photos that I want to use
