This photograph is demonstrative of a huge, cyclical problem within our consumer culture. This problem is that packaging is designed for the convenience of the consumer. This fact causes most consumers to buy those products, a demand which causes manufacturers to produce more convenience based product. For example, the number of non-reusable water bottles I see on a daily basis is staggering. These exist mostly because they are convenient. While it may be better for the planet to carry a reusable water bottle, it is harder for the consumer to remember to refill, wash, refrigerate, and bring it on a regular basis. Additionally, it represents another item for the consumer to carry when they’re done drinking water. We need to learn that sometimes the convenience of a situation isn’t the only thing that matters and begin buying accordingly.
