Disruption is an incredibly effective propaganda film with the short term goal of promoting the people’s climate march. I should clarify that while the term propaganda traditionally has extremely negative connotations, I believe that this propaganda is working to promote a good cause. That being said, I do believe the film does use traditional psychological tricks to help compel the viewer to want to help the climate march.
The messages within the film for designers and artists were perhaps more reassuring than I think will be realistic. The film guarantees that no change in our current economic system will have to take place. In fact, the film tends to reinforce the importance of capitalism, by way of using job creation and future expenses as means of justifying why we should change now. By doing this, the film compels the interests of people who might not ordinarily fight for sustainable design. That being said, these messages were delivered rather well, given the production quality of the film. There was relatively little exploration of what would happen if we were to drastically shift our economic systems, or whether that will be a need in the future. It makes sense that the film would want to avoid exploring this option, given that many people could see a drastic shift in their lifestyle if this were to happen.
The messages for the general public/viewing population was essentially that they should take every and any action they possibly can, especially going to a local march in order to try and act as a physical reminder of the importance of the UN Climate summit.
