Resilience Field Notes

This week, I noticed a lot of food waste within my suite. In particular, it seems that Americans do not tend to plan their meals/grocery acquisitions based on what food will expire. I have noticed that a lot of the food that expires within my suite tends to expire as a result of bad planning, as opposed to expiring before it should. To me, this seems like such a small category of waste that uses tons of unnecessary water, landfill room, shipping materials, and packaging materials. If people simply considered a schedule system by which to prevent food from expiring, we could probably prevent hundreds of thousands of dollars of waste each year. What’s more, all of this unnecessary waste could easily be composted in order to recycle it back into the environment, but I would be willing to guess that a majority of this waste will not be composted in American homes.
