Russia Project Statement

I will be focusing on the relationship between Russia’s governmental structure and the diversity of beauty ideals. While American culture has recently begun accepting a wider pallet of body types, our government is theoretically democratic. This means that each person should have equal say within the government. On the other hand the government of Russia is significantly more authoritarian, meaning that they have significant control over what is created in the country. While Americans have the right to freedom of expression, the same can not be said for Russian citizens. While American freedom of expression should allow for a multiplicity of beauty standards to proliferate, the same might not be true of Russia.

Are you saying that the U S allows for a variety of beauty ideals in actuality or that it SHOULD allow for a variety but doesn’t?

I’m not entirely certain. I would say that historically, it should allow for a variety of beauty ideals but it hasn’t. However, I believe we are currently undergoing a change where a wider array of beauty ideals will be accepted. In other words, I believe we are moving from not having many beauty ideals to having a diversity of beauty ideals.
