The process of making this garment:
In making this garment, I developed my first pattern based solely on studying garments and looking at patterns on the internet. While I am proud of the attempt, I will be making some modifications to the pattern before I begin working on the final project. To start with, I’ll be moving the armholes to a more convenient position, such that the wearer will not be stretching the back in order to wear the garment. Speaking from a logistical standpoint, I learned the amount of fabric that I will need to order for the final garment.
One concern regarding this garment is that the hood design is slightly reminiscent of a KKK hood. I’m not interested in exploring this idea, so I want to reduce visual similarities to KKK robes while sustaining the aggressive/defensive angle of my garment. While it’s worth noting that the Klan’s pointed hoods are similar to a religious garment, the Capirote, the connotations have been hijacked by this hateful group. I will likely need to make the hood longer in the back, to bring it closer to looking like a grim reaper hood. I will also reduce the number of fabric layers making up the hood from 4 to 2, to allow the fabric more of a chance to sag downwards. Depending on how these two modifications look, I may bring the hood back a little to show more of the wearer’s face.
