1.I chose Neil Poulton because he seemed like a natural extension of last week’s study as a designer who has done work for LaCie, which Karim Rashid has worked for. Poulton designs a lot of cutting edge tech products, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple recruits him to their design team one day.
2. Poulton has a BSc degree in Industrial Design from Napier University and a Master’s Degree in Design from Domus Academy.
3. His ‘Rugged’ External Hard Drives for LaCie are probably his most iconic design, as I can imagine most people familiar with the tech industry can recognize them.
His lighting designs are minimal, modern, and tend to have a sculptural nature.
4. Poulton’s work is pretty standard for futuristic designs, utilizing glossy surfaces, organic shapes, and the occasional pop of color for work that is more interested in being playful.
5. From researching Poulton, I learned that a designer can develop strong ongoing relationships with a brand and really integrate themselves with their aesthetic. This is uncommon in the contemporary fashion system, and I would be curious to see if there are any designers who work for brands that they don’t own but have a chance to establish long term relationships with.
