- I selected Yves Béhar because he works with a lot of consumer technology companies and given that I research consumer tech he seems like a good fit for my research interests.
- He has a BS in Industrial Design from the Art Center College of Design.
- Some famous examples of his work include
Clever Little Bag for Puma
One Laptop Per Child
Jawbone Speakers
- Béhar’s visual language seems pretty well-established at this point. He likes rounded rectangular forms in simple but bright colors. What’s more interesting about his designs is his consideration of how they will impact the world. For example, his One Laptop per Child was designed from a cost perspective to provide kids who wouldn’t ordinarily have access to computers with a laptop of their own. His Clever Little Bag for Puma reduces and removes a lot of the packaging from the physical retail process. Recognizing that plastic bags would not be likely to be recycled properly, Béhar made a nice reusable one.
- From researching him, I gained a better understanding of the aesthetics of contemporary tech products. Furthermore, I gained an appreciation for considering the impact one’s designs have on the world in which they are produced, and how understanding that impact can encourage slightly different design decisions that make huge social impacts.
