As I was walking past a grocery store today, I noticed that there were a few clear bags of trash out front. I examined them a little closely and realized that they were filled with bananas and lettuce. The produce was definitely past its prime, but it was all definitely still edible. While I can understand why such produce might not sell, it seems that it could easily be reallocated to food banks, homeless shelters, low-income housing units, or at least a compost somewhere. Interestingly, this reminded me of a video I saw recently about a French grocery chain discounting unsightly produce to reduce waste. The results are amazing, and the video is here.
