Lady Jane

For this assignment, students were separated into pairs and were instructed to wander around the MET and select two pieces from different time periods and combine them into a new piece. I was paired with Rita who chose a piece by Magritte which was a portrait of a woman divided into several small paintings. I chose a guitar owned by Keith Richards, a black Gibson Les Paul painted on by Richards himself with acrylic pens. We started thinking about how to combine these two pieces so we began to experiment on adobe Photoshop. I imported digital versions of both pieces and came up with this. Since a guitar seemed very similar to a woman’s body joined them together. We had to make the decision to exclude the knees and the feet since there were no longer pieces of the guitar the would connect those extra paintings to the guitar. We printed out the digital image, cut it out, layered the pieces onto foam board and cut it out. Upon the class critique, we were told to paint the stand and back of the sculpture and sand down the sides to get a much cleaner sculpture.
