Project 2 – Fortune Telling

Fortune Telling

In this project, I wanted to portray the culture of my home country, Turkey, by creating a storyline about one of the most famous acts which is fortune-telling. In Turkey, coffee cup reading is a very famous tradition which is almost perfected by all citizens. Back in the day, my grandmother was a very famous fortune teller in our neighborhood. I still can remember her hundreds of clients coming to our home every day to get some hints about their future and get some advice about it. Some may say that it is a fraud, but I have some great evidence to support that she had some supernatural talents. According to my grandmother, by reading the remains of Turkish Coffee you can visualize stories about your future. She used to say that while reading them she could hear spirits whispering into her ear.

In this linear composition, I portrayed the traditional way to prepare a Turkish Coffee and even expended the story in order to fit the fortune-telling culture into it. First of all, I digitally draw the scenes I had in my mind. Then wrote detailed descriptions under each of them in order to guide me through the filming process. I got help from my mother with playing my grandmother’s role as a future teller. Adjusting light and frames were a little bit struggling for me since it was my very first attempt to film something. With the advice of my sister, I decided to use a tripod to stabilize my phone while filming.

After filming the scenes, I jumped to Premier Pro to fit them all together. First of all, I combined the clips as needed and cropped unnecessary parts. I applied a blurring transition to the very end of it in order to compose a mysterious final scene. For audio, I got help from Audition. As a background, I used the theme music of a Turkish tv show called Magnificent Century. This music helped me to create a more traditional atmosphere for the video. For the cup reading scene, I used some stock audios of whispering people to mimic spirits. Finally, I overlapped a photo of worn-out paper with the video to creating the feeling of something vintage.

The Storyboard:

I digitally drew my ideas onto the template which our professor provided us by using Photoshop.

The Video:

I developed this video on PremierePro where I had a chance to combine my shots altogether and add the audio I created on Audition.
