In this assignment, we got assigned to come up with our presentations of our selected room in the present time. Our professor also assigned us to have signifiers of both our selected theme and the current time period. In addition to all of these, this assignment pushed us to portray the effects of our selected object over the room while serving the emotion of grief or joy.
Selected Area: Bedroom
My selected area is my bedroom. I have decided to focus on this particular space because of my spiritual connection with it. Over the pandemic, I had this spectacular chance to bond with my room. Through 6 isolated months, I finally focused on my room and decorated it according to my needs and hobbies. After a couple of modifications, this room turned into my habitat, which perfectly serves my needs. Now, my bedroom is the place where I can loosen up, meditate, and do ritualistic practices. With all the candles, crystals, and comfy pillows, this room is my modern-day temple where I can worship my higher self.
Selected Theme: Rituals
As a student who is heavily into mythology and witchcraft, this opportunity to combine my new interest with my schoolwork made me feel so excited. Working on this theme will educate me more about the topic of spirituality, which I am already interested in. Focusing on this theme through the semester will serve my passion by educating myself to master my craft. With this kind of a theme, there is so much to discover and learn about. Exposing myself to new materials and sources helps me to keep myself on track in this magical journey. I am looking forward to finding out more about different aspects of rituals and sharing my studies with my classmates.
Selected Object: Rose Quartz
Manifestation is the act of calling your wants into your life with the help of different rituals and practices. You can both practice it by writing down or speaking loudly. There are almost no limits with manifestation as long as you are not controlling someone’s free will. Crystals are the most vital equipment of your manifestation practices. These magical stones enable you to higher your frequency, helping you send your message to the universe.
My rose quartz is my favorite object in my room since the day I bought it from an antique store. It holds the gifts of healing and protection. Since it has an aura just like human beings, I sometimes envision this object as a friend who keeps me company all the time. After a long and exhausting day, I love to meditate with it and recharge my energy. In its presence, I feel protected and cleansed from all the negative energies. It fills the room with pure joy and with feelings of euphoria. This object fills the room with euphoric energies makes me feel protected and confident no matter what happens. This crystal also symbolizes all the hope I have for the future. Whenever I hold it with my eyes closed, I vision myself as if I have already moved to NYC and earned my position in my dream company just as I manifested.
Connection to Present Time
In this assignment, I got assigned to work with the time present. In order to reflect this selected time concept to my drawing, I used some signifiers. First of all, the best representative of today’s world is a simple facemask. This small object is a great symbol for the only global pandemic of several decades. With the appearance of the infamous virus COVID-19, facemask made its way into our lives and even became essential. Today, people who had no idea about a face mask are currently searching for a facemask with prints on it. This situation came to a point where I can not imagine going to a supermarket wearing one. I must say that facemask caused a cultural reset, and they are the most vital fashion accessory of today. Secondly, the full wolf moon occurred last week. Since my theme is rituals, I thought that this would be a great indicator of time while staying true to my theme. Another signifier for the present time is my way of designing this room. As you can see from my color palette, I intended to have a monochromatic design across the room to signal today’s trends in designing. From the boxes to the tapestry on the wall I forced myself to use all tones of brown to portray this new trend.
The Process
I started with the process of mapping my room. This previous exercise helped me to have a better understanding of my surroundings. I had a chance to examine the furniture and color palette of the selected room. This step also enabled me to see if I want to change anything about the room further through the project.
Secondly, I used my sketchbook to mind map my vision for this project. I tried to find some inspirational pictures to envision my point of view. I dedicated a whole page for testing out different objects that could be a signifier for the present. By this method, I came up with possible options of a facemask, led lights, or a computer. I also prepared a full page to test few signifiers for my theme of rituals. I came up with the colors of the aura, rose quartz, a full wolf moon, and projection technique. In addition to these, I also had a chance to test some color samples to use further in my project. Moreover, I decided to make some changes to my current furniture. I decided to get rid of some shelves on my bookcase to view objects more vividly.
Finally, I watched all the tutorials and checked out all the examples of two perspectives drawing that my professor provided for us. I made my own using a ruler and some graphite pencils. Through this process, I realized that I had to magnify my drawing to display my selected objects as big as possible. After concluding my drawing, I took a photo of it and imported it o photoshop. Here I got rid of some access lines and made my drawing much clear. I decided to get rid of the objects on the middle shelf since they shadow the existence of my signifier, the crystal. I also colored it in using my previously selected color choice. I also wanted to add the face mask digitally. Since it is a tiny object, I felt more comfortable with digitally drawing it.
Present Bedroom
This drawing portrays my bedroom. You can view my embedded bookcase on the left-hand side displaying a bunch of boxes on the topper shelves. These boxes usually hold my spare candles and my collection of herbs. They also highlight the monochromatic and simplistic design of my room. The middle shelf is fully dedicated to my ritualistic objects, especially my crystal collection, a signifier for my “rituals” theme. On the right-hand side, I pictured my bed with a faux leather headboard and a tapestry on top of it. I used the tones of browns and beiges all around the room, representing my room’s current state, without any control over it. The most vivid signifier of time is the rising full wolf moon. You can see its light approaching the crystal with the white stripe on the left-hand side of the drawing. When the light hits my rose quartz, it projects violet hues across the room. I portrayed the crystal’s effect on the room by using all shades of violet, as you can see from the stripe on the bed. This color choice also has a special meaning to it. These shades represent the aura of euphoria, which portrays the crystal’s emotional control over the room and me. Another signifier of time is the facemask dangling from the headboard. This facemask represents our drastically changed habits in the period of one year. This small object became essential for our daily life in today’s world. To sup up with its special color choice and multiple signifiers for my theme and the present time, this drawing is a representative of my bedroom in the present time.
