Bedroom Elevation drawings

In this assignment, our professor encouraged us to explore our selected room as a singular standing house. For this work, it was a requirement to draw this house from all 4 sides of it.

The Process

I started this project by measuring the height of the walls. This information was vital to construct the house true to its authentic size. Then I measured the heights of the doors and windows. By combining the information that I have gathered with my previous floor plan and this observation of mine, I started to sketch my piece.

After that, I attached a new grided paper to the bottom of the floor plan I have previously done. By connecting the lines, I tried to transform the correct sizes in order to come up with a more accurate scale. I repeated this process for all 4 sides of the house. However, after completing that step, I noticed that my grip paper is so dark that the marks do not show through. So, I have found a grided paper that is lighter than the one I found from the canvas post and transformed my drawing by tracing it. This made my drawings appear more bold and defined.

I began by drawing the ground level of the room. Then I added the walls and carved out the openings like doors and windows. To finalize the piece, I added the roof of the house. For my piece, I wanted to use a flat roof for a modern appearance.  After finalizing the base of the structure, I added the textures onto the walls using lines and mark-making techniques. For my room, I found it appropriate to have a wooden exterior. I tried to reflect this texture using the combination of verticle and horizontal lines. I further developed the composition by drawing a little bit of the space that the room is surrounded by.

The last step was to add informative elements. I wrote the scale of the grids and the direction of the four walls. My final touch was adding the measurements for every element that the drawing illustrates.

What was the most interesting thing you learn about your Living Room / Bedroom through this process of creating an Elevation drawing?

This assignment was a great exercise to raise your awareness towards your surroundings. This work evolved and kind of challenged my skills of drawing up to a scale and drawing according to a particular side or point of view. Before this exercise, I have never realized that my room actually has a very awkward figure. I used to always think that my room has a pretty symmetric shape, little that I knew it is nothing like that. I noticed that all the embedded furniture in my room, like the closet and the bookcase, causes awkward shapes to appear from outside. I also live in an apartment complex, so seeing my room as a singular standing building was a fascinating job for me. Now I can not help to see that rooms as puzzle pieces that have weird shapes but somehow manage to connect perfectly.
