Texture and Shading Practice

In this assignment, we got a chance to experience new shading techniques and test them on 3-D objects. We also invented different textures and tried them on our thematic objects, and created and irony.

What was the most challenging part of this assignment, and why?

The most challenging aspect of this assignment was coming up with new mark-making techniques. I searched all over Pinterest to get inspired, but everything seemed monotone and similar to each other. So, I had to go out of my way to finds some new shading techniques. Whenever I find something interesting, it didn’t look very good on the sphere. I tested a couple of marks to finally find some styles that could look good both on the sphere and in the testing box.

What new texture did you invent for your object to make it ironic? Why did you choose that texture, and was it successful?

I invited a texture made up of little circles, almost like it imitates snakeskin. This texture illustrates shadows with small and narrow circles while using big ones to demonstrate light. I decided to match this particular texture with my rose quartz (thematic object) to make it look like alive. When you first examine a crystal, you only reach the idea that it is a where much lifeless looking piece of rock. However, if you had a chance to study crystals on a spiritual level, you could realize that they are nothing like a pebble. Unlike other regular objects, crystals vibrate in very high-frequency, almost as high as living organisms. This fact sparked the idea of turning this object into something alive using texture. While developing this idea, I remembered that original crystals are always cold to the touch disregarding the room’s temperature, just like reptiles. This idea inspired me to create a texture out of little circles to imitate snakeskin. To be honest, I am pleased with how it turned out both visually and symbolic. This texture added a different dynamic to a very plain looking object.
