Studio 1- Bridget 5

Bridget 1- Memoir 3D

In the Bridget one, we talked about our memoir and we choose three souvenirs from seminar class. I think this project helps us to recall our memory because we will forget that childhood after a few years. This is my first time to make 3D models and I got a hard time to produce a model, but finally, I used some cylinders to make a toy bear. For my souvenir passport, I made an airplane but it actually failing to show on the 3D APP.

Bridget 2- Contestational Artifacts

The second Bridget, we worked with and interviewed a partner. From the interview with Candice, I knew she had a dream catcher so I decided to make a dream catcher necklace for Candice. A dreamcatcher is used to catch bad dreams or terrible things so I plan to prepare a dreamcatcher that she can bring to the outside and carry with her. All the bad things or troubles will be caught by this web. I chose her favorite color “blue” and some and texture is woolen yarns because she likes soft toys. It makes her feel belongingness and safe.

Normally, the dreamcatcher we knew has feathers but I think the object already big enough if I add it will be too much so I decided not to do it. The length is close to your chest and the shape of the object is two circles. Circles mean the nature which are very powerful. The reason I make it this long was because it can give you power and courage.

Bridget 3- NY Experience Video

In Bridget 3, we chose a location in NY and made a documentary. Our group did the research of Soho which is located near East Village and Chinatown. We focused on history, architecture, street art, social activities and the feedback from the people in Soho. Our group met at Soho once, the most difficult thing is to interview strangers because sometimes they would not like to do it. The other difficult thing we faced is we have to go over all the videos and then add them to the final piece.

Bridget 4- Research-led Design

This Bridget, I chose the topic the same as my seminar class– fast fashion. My thesis is fast fashion satisfies people’s need but it is a negative element. I wrote a mood board and listed all the information in my research.

I choose this topic because I am major in fashion design and also fast fashion became a global topic in recent past decades. Fast fashion satisfy people’s needs to be trendy, but they have a huge carbon footprint, pollute the environment, and contributes to the world’s dumpling, landfills, and waste.

According to Omnilytics, it said, “In Q4 2017, H&M experienced its lowest level of sales on record since 2005 and in Q1 2018 H&M operating sales fell 62% versus the year before.”, and “H&M accused of burning 12 tonnes of new, unsold clothing per year.” as the act of choosing to destroy is irresponsible.

My product of the topic is a tote bag which used different fabric from my old clothes. In the beginning, I planned to separate all my clothes into three parts; new, kind of new, old. Unfortunately, it was not enough so I went to the studio at UC and collect the fabric left from the students and also used the leftover from my other project. I got this idea from the elder people in China, they like to mend kid’s clothes. It saves money and also shows their love. The idea of this artifact is to find something and make it valuable, and not just continue to buy more stuff or throw them away, I want to encourage people to be creative on making a new object and be a rational shopper. I think this project is very flexible that we can choose any topic related to ourselves and I also can express a social phenomenon about fast fashion.
