SEM: The place that matters

The location of Central Park is 5th Avenue, Central West Park and 110 streets within New York City. The location is a preferable ground for those who need a location to cool off and relax as they meditate, cool off or get to be in the company of their friends and peers. The ambiance of Central Park is borne from the well-manicured, diverse flora and fauna and the Central Park Lake. The entire park is serene with the air tranquil, thus, serving as an attraction for those visiting New York and a gem for the residents of the city. The Central Park has a well-designed building, follies, and sculptures that make it an outstanding scenic feature within the Manhattan region[1]. The size of the park is 843 acres, and an ideal tourist attracts that attract approximately 37 million visitors.[2] The interest of the visitors is not only limited to the aesthetic beauty and the well-manicured lawns that it provides but also the collection of writings that one is capable of finding within the park. The area of interest is the region of the park is above the 96th street, owing to its recognition as a national historical landmark. Based on the historical context the design and construction process is very difficult, making it more valuable.

The establishment of a national historical landmark would mean that the park stands out, particularly, based on its history and development contexts. The design of the Central Park is based on the need to replicate the public spaces in London and France. The initiative is majorly driven by the need to enhance the aesthetic beauty of the park and ensure that it provides good ambiance to its users. The state legislature of 1853 that gave room to the New York City mayor to acquire land within the Manhattan region is the source of the development initiative that was undertaken.[3] The legislation is responsible for the establishment of the Central Park Commission which takes care of the region about the 19th streets with the playgrounds and benches.

The competition sponsored by the Central Park Commission in 1857 gave room for designers to present views on how the facility could meet its intended purpose. Land space gardeners and architects are some of the professionals who submitted their proposals. The mixture of the crosstown roads, the designation of well-manicured lawns, setting of places of recreation, walkways, driveways and the carriage drives represent aspects of the park that were taken into consideration. The bridges within the central park serve the sole purpose of eliminating grade crossing and easing the flow of traffic and movement of the pedestrians. What is unique about the 96th streets the design of the footpaths and the roads.

The designing of the park was unique and intricate in its own measure. The pedestrian path was constructed in a way that they could not intertwine with the roads. Additionally, there were to be many hills, lake, and swaps within the ideal location of the park[4]. The building of English setting buildings that were strong and monumental and planting of trees that could make them not visible for those outside the park is an additional contribution to the beauty of the park. The construction of the park was a heavy capital investment with thousands of workers engaged on a full-time basis for more than a decade. The design serves a series of purposes.

First, Central Park was to serve the purpose of recreation and relaxation to the millions of people who had the desire and intention to make a visit there. Additionally, the design of the park draws from the social experiment where people of various economic classed could easily meet and interact. The park also played the role of bringing people together and enabling them to share on its beauty based on the various activities that one could take up. The playgrounds and the zoo provide recreation activities to the visitors of the park. The 1960s is a period that is significant to the park owing to its declining stature and the ills that many people witnessed, which then lead to a relatively lesser number of people making the decision to make a visit. The increase in the dumping of garbage and the rise in criminal activities discouraged many people who could make a visit to the park. However, there are efforts that have been previously made to eliminate the criminal activities within the park.

Creation of the Central Park Conservancy in 1980 is a significant step towards the recreation of the park. Some of the undertakings of the institution include the removal of graffiti within the park, its maintenance and making its accessible to all and the provision of security to property and its visitors. The collaboration between the organization and the police department with the intention of providing security is the most critical undertaking that restored the glory of the Park. The city and private institutions are also part of the perpetual improvement of the park, thus, its regular recreation. The Conservancy creates ideal sights and attractions for its users.

What I can see that one else could see is the waterfall that is existent in the only natural stream that is flowing through the park. The stream is surrounded by tall trees and has a path close to it that many people hardly see. The ambiance of the trees tends to cloud the sight of many from actually seeing the waterfall. Seemingly, it is manmade and has the sole intention of adding to the park’s aesthetic value.

Central Park is general lush green during summer, and many people are often attracted to the various species of flowers and trees that are either planted or growing naturally. Additionally, the many bridges with water flowing under them is an additional factor that leads up to its consideration. The lower half is also an ideal location for outdoor activities such as sports and team building exercises. Furthermore, there are historical buildings and statutes that may tend to attract those interested in the historical developments of the Manhattan region. The gates that lead up to the park are eighteen in total with each having a unique name that is tied up to an aspect of American history. Some of the notable entrances include the Merchant’s Gate, Engineer’s Gate and Vanderbilt gate. The naming of the entrances is based on personalities with a significant contribution to the growth and development of the United States and those who played a role in the development of the park.

The strawberry lakes, Shakespeare Garden and the Bow Ridge and Rumble, are some of the most notable attractions within the location. The choice of the statues that the county officials erect within a park tag along with their contribution to American history and would remind the public of their painful past of major historical hallmarks. The history that the statutes rekindle needs to bring about positivity rather than rekindling negative energies and division amongst the various races of the United States. Importantly, the choice of the article is premised on the role of Public Design Commission in making the final decision of the monuments that need to be erected and those that need to be pulled down from a public recreational ground[5]. The commitment of the park is to enhance its sustainability.

Coordination of all the stakeholders in replenishing the park and making the necessary repairs is ideal. Additionally, the protection of the statutes and the buildings would also be ideal in enhancing the aesthetic beauty of the park. However, the researches that have been conducted by the scholars also need to be taken up. Therefore, the management of the city, conservationist groups, locals and supporters of the park have the sole responsibility of coming up with programs that would improve on its beauty.

Sustainability of the park is determined by its capability to support all forms of life, which would then create a serene environment that is desirable to all. The study is also of importance in understanding the factors that one needs to look into when making a decision of tracking the healthiness of forms of life within the park. Some of the determinants of life and support system of the biomes that the park ought to provide include eukaryotic species, bacteria and archaeal species and green genes, which are al comparable to what is available in the global databases and sample sets. Therefore, the support systems within the designated location are the primary determinant when making a choice of a recreational ground.

In conclusion, Central Park is a historical location within the Manhattan location that authors have written extensively about in the books, journals, websites and academic articles. The choice of the academic sources that one could draw valuable information from, regarding the park is, however, defined by the reliability and validity of the sources that are utilized in the paper. The validity of the academic articles is evident through the name of the journal in which it is published, whether it has been peer-reviewed and its circulation. The articles that have been used in this paper are peer reviewed and have nationwide circulation. Additionally, all the sources are not more than five years old, which, then affirms the reliability of the information in them. Historically, the shift from coal to oil use in the 1930s is responsible for the decreased presence of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the central park. The content of the article is critical for the environmental conservationists who need to write on the sustainability of the place that matters. The need to document how pollutants could have a long-term impact on the ecology and the deleterious effects that they could present to the physical environment is highlighted in the article.
