Space/ Materiality: Project #3: Monuments/ Final Form: Reflection

For this project, I wanted to create a contrast between the wood structure and the plaster figure. I utilized the rigidness of the wood to produce a dynamic geometric structure made out of lines. With the plaster, I wanted to take advantage of the organic nature of the material and created bulbous stones with a soft presence. When these two elements are put together, the dichotomy of the materials and the shapes becomes a more distinct quality of the overall piece. My initial plan was to stack the stones on top of each other, however, I decided that it would be best if the structures are more integrated together and dispersed along the wooden lines of the structure. I felt that this integration would create more of a contrast therefore creating more definition for the plaster figures. The plaster part of the project was fairly easy as I mostly had to carve out different sized stones. However, the wooden part showed to be a little more difficult which was partly my fault because I chose a wood piece that had odd dimensions meaning that I had to be very careful with my calculations. I mostly used dowels as my connections, however, I had to be careful with where and how I drilled the pieces because if I drilled it in the wrong angle the whole piece would be compromised. For my other connections, I used the butt head joint and the dota joint, one with nails and the other with screws. The nails went in fairly easy while I messed up with the screws a couple of times. I ended up using some wood putty to fill up some mistakes and holes but made sure everything was smooth and looking clean. I also felt that it would be best if I painted it to elevate that contrast so I painted the wood black which makes the white of the plaster pop really nice. Overall, it was a challenging experience but I really enjoy how it came out.
