Lately, I have been working on an architecture building called, Cloud. This architectural model was inspired by the Oculus architecture in New York City. With the organic line and the spinal structure, which seem to hold Oculos up. For this assignment, we did have to incorporate the organic and spinal from the Oculus. At first, it was difficult to think about something new that, didn’t seem to absolutely inspire by oculus.
First I did some sketches of the Oculus, to get a sense of an idea for my own project. These were quick minute sketches and even blind drawings. What I was trying to focus on was the structure of how everything comes to a point and how each panel, comes together on the top.
Later on, I started to sketch, and mostly with the idea of having my object to having a long spine, with ribcage, and that you would only see it from the top. Side views would look like a human body that is laying down on the ground. However I quickly changed my mind with this because I really didn’t like the spine idea, and to me this was boring and it looked a lot similar to the Oculus.
I liked the direction of having organic lines in my drawing, and from all the sketches, I came up with the cloud. My thought process was to have a cloud floating in the air. So, the base would be glass and the cloud aspect would sit on top with a very reflective metallic.
I did become more ambitious and trying to create, three clouds but THIS ASSIGNMENT HAD TO BE FINISH!! So, I only ended up making 2 clouds, BUT! my final outcome came out is different from my sketches. I was really happy about the outcome of the cloud because It came out better than I imagine. In the end, I wanted to make it simply organic, and not just have a cloud sit on top of a box.
I was also trying to see where my building can be placed in. At first, I wanted it to be an airport building, but then it made sense to be set building that anyone can go in, in the middle of a field. Like a hidden gem. I wanted to seem more peculiar.
Going through many changes was pretty fun because I wanted my Cloud to make sense to people with the amount of opening I have. and not to lose the form when adding the tracing paper. Adding that tracing paper was the most difficult thing to add at the end because the wires were in the way in certain sections. and also it gave me a bunch of small cuts. In the end, it was a success!
Materials
-Wire: different types of a thickness of wire to hold up the structure.
-Tracing paper: to cover certain parts that represent wall
-PVA glue: I kind of recommend it, but it takes a while to dry. Also, it’s only good if you’re only working with paper, for other materials use better glue.
-Plywood: Which was used for the base.
Here are other honorable mentions of
Rejected sketches…
These two structures were interesting, however, it did not have that spine-like or even something that would hold up the entire structure.
