Sketches for Sound Map
My initial idea was to just draw/paint a 2D image to represent the sounds present in the Ming Scholar’s Garden at the MET, however my group brought up the idea of creating a 3D interactive structure for our sound map instead.
My initial inspiration:
Then, I thought of creating a structure where the viewer will have to walk around it the same way you would need to walk around the garden. I broke it off into sections so it began with the entrance (wood) –> pond (water) –> meditation focal point (stone) –> exit (wood).
I also wanted to focus on language, but instead of it being a section by itself it would encircle the whole structure. I was also planning on blending the various languages heard throughout the garden since that day a multitude of tongues were spoken. I would’ve used the wires to bend them into actual conversations heard in my recordings and mid-sentence I’d introduce a new language, then repeat that process continuously around the base of the map.
