We were given a mini project in class, which consisted of us writing out 100 topics within a couple of minutes. Then, we had to narrow down our choices to five topics and we proceeded with writing each topic on a piece of paper. My partner Nhumi and I each had our set of words, and we randomly picked a word from our perspective piles. The combination we ended up choosing for the theme of our assignment was Narcissistic Youth.
I proposed the idea of using some sort of reflective material such as a mirror to symbolize narcissism in our society.
Train of thought
- The invention of mirrors was practically the epitome of narcissism.
- The piece should be centered around a person talking a selfie because in our society that’s the next level of narcissism.
- However, the figure shouldn’t occupy the entire mirror because we want the viewer to feel engaged with the piece as well. By having a figure partially on the mirror it’s meant allow the viewer to picture themselves as the figure taking a selfie.
- Then, we decided to cover the entire piece with slang, social media terms, and words that represented our generation today. The words were purposely clustered in a chaotic way to make the viewer feel almost claustrophobic to symbolize how the need to partake in the selfie culture/social media can be overwhelming at times.
Overall I was happy with the finished product, however when it came to presentation time in class I wasn’t as thrilled. The feedback was helpful and the main concerns were the presentation of the actual piece. Even though I asked people to step closer one by one to view the piece, almost everyone just remained in their spots. We could’ve made some sort of curtain to shroud the piece and force people to physically walk up to it.
