Learning Portfolio Reflection Post (Integrative Seminar 1)

I am Harris (Chin pang) Tsui, majoring in Design and Technology. I am very interested in doing designs with computers, using computer as a tool to carry out my aesthetics and ideas.

Going into Bridge three, we explored social injustice around us, and our group specifically chose the topic of Food desert which it digs into race and oppression. We were in a group of three, me, Jaymes and Kadeem. We first collected information and data online; then wrote our supporting wall text according to the facts we found. We also created this ASMR video to give the project a richer visual stimulus. Empty plates and white forks are placed on the ground, and information/data that exposes food desert injustice are glued to the plates. Process: We first collected information in regard to food deserts in United States, then we analyze the information and integrated into our installation with numbers and facts. After this project, I figured that numbers are especially effective to persuade the audience. During the making, researching of the project, we’re also assigned to read this book by James Baldwin called I am not your negro, and I have to say it is the single most effective and powerful book I have ever read: it completely changes the way I see race. After Bridge 3, I reflected a lot on race and especially how race is constructed in America. Race is very socially constructed, it doesn’t exist without haters. And I never thought of the fact that being racist is a way of attacking back on someone, which means all the African American that are being discriminated are the targeted group. People deny their existence because they want less competition: African American had risen up and competed in all job fields. Hate only exists when there are interference of their own benefits. Which explained all the race problems within the United States. After this project, I have a stronger understanding of race, and I will no longer believe the existence of “different race” because we’re all human beings. The project had strengthened my skills to conduct an effective research paper/project, looking for effective information like numbers to better persuade the reader. And I will continue to work on this aspect in Integrative 2; keep strengthening my writing and research skills along with designs.
