Raise and Spread awareness around this new emerging method of transportation.

Highlighting the critical issue of cybersecurity (supporting evidence from seminar’s paper).

Transportation often refers to the movement of an object or a person from one destination to another. Transportation plays a prominent role in today’s world and it has a direct impact on almost all human activities. Methods of transportation have evolved over time as human beings are able to acquire and develop more advanced technology. People are able to travel faster, further, and more efficiently than ever before and these innovations still continue today. The very first form of human’s transportation was the pack animal, we utilized animals like camels, horses, and elephants for transportation. However, due to the lack of speed and population explosion, this method was eventually eliminated. A growing population forced us to come up with more efficient transportation options leading to the invention of the automobile. The automobile allows 4-5 passengers per vehicle. It also travels at a much higher speed, now it can go faster than 100 miles per hour. However, the presence of a driver to monitor the vehicle is the biggest flaw in the system; humans cannot avoid making mistakes, and car accidents occur daily. Those are the main factors that contribute to traffic jams. It is not fair to compare these two different methods that existed in different time periods, but the constant improvement of efficiency shows nothing but human progression. Today, the rise of e-commerce gives us the privilege to buy almost everything online and as a result, countless packages are waiting to be delivered. We can no longer rely so heavily on human labor and our current source of transportation, a more efficient option is needed to travel and transport goods between cities. With the vast developments in the technology field, we are able to monitor vehicles on a computer system without the presence of a human being. Human beings are quietly developing into an automated system of transportation. It can be broken down into four main directions: drone delivery, self-driving cars, maglev train, and hyperloop.  Drones will soon be responsible for delivering our packages, this new method is beneficial to both shipping companies and buyers. People want to receive their packages faster and shipping companies like UPS and Fedex do not want to pay a person all day to deliver packages. Drone delivery would help with both of these wants and needs. High-end grocery stores like Wholefoods will also have door to door delivery service with the help of these drones, people will be able to shop and receive their groceries comfortably at home. Self-driving cars, also can be in a form of pods, will also be introduced. They allow people to travel with more space, speed, safety, and more importantly, people are able to better utilize their time with a large space provided. Due to the elimination of human error, self-driving cars have the ability to reduce or completely abolish road accidents. The Maglev train, which can travel at a speed of 200-400 miles per hour will also be self-driven, controlled and monitored by a central computer system. The train doesn’t have a direct contact with the rail, therefore, it is completely noiseless. It is a possible replacement for the New York subway system. Hyperloop is also completely noiseless and it travels underground at a speed of 700 miles per hour, allowing people to travel across the United States within 4 hours. If people are able to utilize the hyperloop as an effective means of quick transportation, airplanes may be eliminated from continental travel. However, there are still many obstacles and challenges before we can actually benefit from these new systems of transportation, and cybersecurity remain to be the biggest concern. Drones, hyperloop, self-driving cars, and maglev trains function completely on a computer system, which can be very vulnerable. Hackers are getting closer to us than ever before, from the U.S. presidential campaign to the ransomware from North Korea, cyber security has threatened many aspects of our lives. It has temporarily stopped us from moving into the automated system of transportation. We must first figure out a more stable, secure network that can ensure no hackers are able to interfere the functionality of these vehicles. I have found that the media is accurately portraying the vulnerability of cybersecurity which is more vulnerable than one could imagine. As a demonstration in the video clip, two Russian hackers are able to gain access to the reporter’s hotel room with a clone room key made from stolen data, and then install hidden cameras and devices in the room to obtain things like credit card information, photos, messages, and etcetera. With the current cyber laws and policies, there’s zero data privacy once one exposes ones information online to companies like Facebook in which they claim that personal data will be absolutely protected. But sooner or later, we will come up with a set of more integrated, and secured cyber laws that apply not only regionally, but across the globe. This will help limit the damage that a hacker can do and most importantly, it will protect the transportation system from any malicious interference. Meanwhile, it is beneficial to learn about the potential strengths and weaknesses of this new system, helping us to eliminate the potential fear of riding on a self-driven vehicle in the near future.
